Infrared Trigger Countermeasure (IRTCM)
In the beginning, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was a simple device, but it has evolved into more and more complex forms and is currently the major technique for attacking the US and coalition forces. In many cases a radio controlled IED can be defeated by jamming the frequencies that the command signal operates on.
Jamming is sufficiently effective that the insurgents have evolved the IED to include a wide variety of non-radio techniques for detonating the IED. One such technique is the use of the passive infrared (PIR) sensor common to home and office security systems. These sensors respond to changes in the infrared/heat signal that arrives at the active portion of the sensor. The long-term safety of troops in the field requires that methods to defeat IED’s be developed and implemented as rapidly as possible.
Stellar Photonics, LLC has develop a means to defeat IED’s that are triggered by passive infrared sensors. The system has been effective through government tests and can be used conjunction with current radio frequency counter-measures without any interference to disrupt the use of two of the most common forms of IED.
